In 1979, a group of young filmmakers decide to make an adult film on a rural Texas farm, but when their reclusive, elderly hosts catch them in the act, the crew finds themselves fighting for their lives. The day after X’s (2022) South by Southwest premiered, writer/director Ti West revealed that while in a mandatory two-week COVID-19 quarantine at his New Zealand hotel before filming could begin on that film, he wrote a prequel, Pearl (2022). A24 saw the script and greenlit the film before “X” even wrapped. He asked star Mia Goth if she wanted to stay in New Zealand and film “Pearl,” and she readily agreed.

When Lorraine enters the basement and turns on the light, there is a modern halogen bulb, which was not available in 1979. Maxine: I will not accept a life I do not deserve. There are no opening credits. The title does not even appear on screen until the end.
I was thrilled to see such a star-studded cast, including Jenna Ortega and Brittany Snow

I originally watched this film as an introduction to Mia Goth’s acting, which I have to say is incredible in this film. That being said, I feel that the writing did not live up to the potential of the cast. If you’re looking for a nostalgic 70s/80s style slasher movie, this one might fit the bill.
Overall, her movie was good but not great
The character motivations in this movie leave a lot to explain and are disappointing in my opinion. That being said, this movie serves as a lead-in to the much better executed prequel, “Pearl,” and “X” is definitely worth watching just to experience “Pearl” in all its glory. However, I look forward to the character development in the sister movies surrounding this plot. A24 has produced some of the most memorable horror movies of the 21st century.
