The lush, breathtaking beauty of the Alps, captured with picturesque grace in natural light from freezing winter to redemptive spring, provides the physical and emotional backdrop for the 2024 Venice Film Festival Lion-winning film Vermiglio. Set in the small mountain town of Vermiglio in the final days of World War II, the film follows a series of dramatic and consequential events following the arrival of a silent Sicilian soldier (Giuseppe De Domenico) who has been hiding in the town after deserting the army. While there, the soldier strikes up a romance with the family’s eldest daughter, Lucia (Martina Scrinzi). “Vermiglio” follows the lives of a provincial family in a remote town suspended in time by the customs of a fading age. By recalling stories from her own family’s past, Delpero creates a deeply personal and human story that recalls the great neorealist movement in Italian cinema, but from Lucía’s perspective, “Vermiglio” feels different and novel.
