In 1985, devoted Father Bill Furlong uncovers disturbing secrets held by a local monastery and uncovers shocking personal truths. Cillian Murphy is a fan of the original author of the novel, Claire Keegan. She remembers reading her novel “Foster” on the train and having to pull a hood over her face because she was crying. Here, like Bill Furlong, he conveys a sadness rarely seen or understood by those close to him. But we (the audience) see that it is there. I won’t go into much history. Honestly, there’s not much there. But that doesn’t mean the movie is bad. It just means it’s a simple story. But very well written, beautifully shot (I thought I was in 1980s Ireland the whole time) and incredibly well acted. Magdelene Laundromats were a real thing until 1996, when the last one closed. Unmarried and pregnant teenage girls are sent to convents to give birth and lose their children to forced adoption. All the while, they were abused as cheap labor by the nuns who ran the laundries. Sometimes they were physically abused and mistreated. He left his mark on the soul of the country. Eileen Walsh, who plays Miss Furlong, also starred in The Magdalene Sister in 2003. Coincidence or not: I recommend watching it because it’s the perfect ending to this movie.
