But we (the audience) can see it’s there

I could watch Murphy stare at the wall and watch the paint dry and still buy a ticket. Here, as Bill Furlong, he conveys a sadness rarely seen or understood by those close to him. I don’t go into the story that much.

Honestly, there’s not much there

But that doesn’t mean it’s a bad movie. It just means it’s a simple story. But a very well written, beautifully shot (the whole time I thought I was in Ireland in the eighties) and incredibly well acted.

Sometimes they were physically abused and mistreated

The Magdelene laundries were real until 1996, when the last one was closed. Unmarried pregnant teenagers were sent to convents to give birth and lose their children to forced adoption. Meanwhile, they were abused as cheap labor by the nuns running the laundries.

She left a mark on the soul of the country. Furlong, also appeared in the film Sister Magdalene from 2003. Coincidence or not, I recommend watching it because it’s a perfect bookend to a gem of a movie.
